Pharmacological mechanisms
Vitamin B1 (thiamin) plays an important role as a coenzyme in carbohydrate and
protein metabolism, and in the synthesis of the nucleic acids. Vitamin B1 is related
to the activity of the nervous and the neuromuscular system. It facilitates the
processes of biosynthesis of the main mediator acetylcholine and suppresses the
enzyme cholinesterase (which degradates acetylcholine). In cases of lack of thiamin
in the body, the transmission of the nervous impulses in the CNS synapses and the
mental functions are disturbed.
