CODEINUM PHOSPHORICUM

StockNo Product description
EB0280-410-08 CODEINE PHOSPHATE TABL 10 MG X 10
EB0280-410-27 CODEINE PHOSPHATE TABL 20 MG X 10

COMPOSITION:
Codeine phosphate 10 mg and 20 mg in one tablet

ACTION:
Codeine phosphate is a piperidinophenantrene alkaloid of opium, with good antitussive and weaker analgesic effect. The antitussive effect is due to its direct selective inhibitory action on the cough center in medulla oblongata. Its administration in therapeutic doses hides no danger of suppressing the respiratory center. It has a week sedative effect and its prolonged administration leads to constipation.

PHARMACOKINETICS:
The preparation is absorbed very well when administered orally, it is distributed uniformly and passes rapidly the hematoencephalic barrier. The elimination takes place by glucuronide binding which leads to increased intoxication in early childhood. About 80% of the preparation is excreted with the urine in the form of metabolites, the rest is unchanged. Its biological half-life is from 3.9 to 5.3 hours for healthy people.

INDICATIONS:
The preparation is used mainly for suppressing the cough in bronchitis, whooping cough, etc. (predominantly in case of dry cough without secreta in the bronchial tree). As a weak analgesic drug, also in cases of pain in the gastrointestinal tract, in combination with other analgesic drugs.
SIDE EFFECTS:
The prolonged administration of codeine phosphate leads to constipation. Higher doses (0.1-0.2) may provoke a certain excitement, nausea, heaviness in the head, insomnia and in conditions characterized with bronchospasm (asthma or lung emphysema) it may accelerate the development of heavy respiratory insufficiency due to the increased viscosity of the bronchial secreta and the suppression of the cough center. Prolonged use may lead to drug-dependence.

DRUG INTERACTIONS:
The preparation enhances the central depressive action of alcohol, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, hypnotics and sedative drugs.

PRECAUTIONS:
Prolonged use leads to addiction (codeinism), with symptoms of adstinence when the treatment is discontinued. The preparation should not be administered without any control.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION:
Adults - orally 10-20 mg, 3-4 times daily. Maximum daily dose - 300 mg.
Children (over 6 months) - 1-4 mg according to the age and the general state.
